Are all theists dumb and ignorant? Many New Atheists frequently characterize Christians (as well as other theists) as something akin to “moronic imbeciles.” What leads them to such a conclusion? Perhaps part of the reason for their view is that they fail to seek out, and interact with, those theists who have thought deeply and carefully about the issues. Their statements stand in contrast with other atheists who regularly interact with the “best and brightest” of the theistic camp.
For example, Dr. Thomas Nagel is a committed atheist who teaches philosophy at New York University. He is widely respected as a brilliant philosopher and he teaches at a university that is regarded as one of the best in the world for philosophy. He has spent a lifetime interacting with the world's top philosophers and other intellectuals. After a lifetime of such interaction, he has made the following statement.
I want atheism to be true and am made uneasy by the fact that some of the most intelligent and well-informed people I know are religious believers.
